A buyer’s guide to health plan care navigation
Look for a traceable path from the presenting concern to a clinically reviewed recommendation, a usable in-network option, member confirmation, and an observed outcome. A referral alone does not establish completed care or avoided spending.

Start with a defined population
Select one commercial book, geography, and entry channel. Identify where members currently seek help and which contracted destinations can actually receive them. An impressive directory is not useful if appointments, hours, or eligibility are wrong.
Keep clinical decisions separate from savings
Require clinical leadership to define escalation and review rules before financial targets are set. Members need an understandable recommendation and retain their choice. Never make a cheaper care setting the automatic answer.
Demand an outcome vocabulary
Ask vendors to distinguish recommendations from accepted options, completed visits, and claim-validated results. Evaluate price information honestly
The product distinguishes payer-specific rates, cash prices, Medicare-derived estimates, and unavailable data. A procedure rate is not the full visit cost or a member’s out-of-pocket liability. Validate code coverage, plan matching, and publication dates before using pricing in a member journey.
